Diplomats Go 1-1 at Grapple in the Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team opened action on Sunday at the fourth annual Grapple in the Garden dual meet competition with a dominant 34-12 win over Division III's Oswego St., before falling to Big-10 powerhouse Northwestern by a 30-18 margin to close out the competition.

The Diplomats moved to 2-5 on the year, while the Oswego Lakers dropped to 0-2 and the No. 21 ranked Northwestern Wildcats improved to 1-1.

Taking place in one of the nation's most historic sporting venues, and the site of this year's NCAA Tournament, Madison Square Garden, the event has become a staple on the college-wrestling calendar and brings together the largest group of programs in a dual meet format.

With a 2-0 record on the day, Rick Durso is now just one win shy of tying the program's all-time win record. The 141-pound grappler holds a 116-33 mark and trails only Craig Blackman 81, who accumulated a 117-31-2 record.

Against Oswego, F&M dominated from the onset and earned a pair of technical falls and two pins to jump out to a 28-0 lead. Four of the Diplomats other wins came by narrow decisions, including a thrilling 2-1 victory by Anthony Mancini in the tiebreaker at 184. Antonio Pelusi closed out action with a 3-1 decision at 285.

With the decision, the Diplomats are now 2-0 against Division III opponents on the year, outscoring the opposition by a 74-18 margin.

At 141, Durso went into the third ahead by a 4-2 score before a reversal from Northwestern's Jameson Oster tied the contest late. However, Durso registered a clutch escape in the closing minute to secure the win.

Northwestern pulled away with four straight wins from 157 to 184. Another Wildcat forfeit at 197, followed by Antonio Pelusi's second win of the day at 285 brought the final score to a mere 12-point differential. Tied at 2-2 heading in the third, Pelusi chose bottom and eventually recorded the escape to hold on for the narrow 3-2 decision.
