F&M Topples Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team grabbed three straight wins to open up its Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) dual with Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon and never looked back, holding on for a 21-13 victory.

The dual win was the first of the season for the Diplomats, evening their record at 1-1, while the Pioneers fell to 0-1 in their opener.

Dan Martoccio scored an early takedown at 125 and held on for the decision to give F&M an early 3-0 lead. Patrick Quinlan continued with the stellar start to his freshman campaign, picking up a pin in the third period to extend the Diplomats' advantage to 9-0.

At 141, Robert Ruiz stormed out of the gate, taking a 5-0 lead after the first. The senior grappler kept on the pressure in the second, leading the Pioneers' Kyle Brady by a 9-3 tally heading in the third en route to the 10-4 decision.

Sacred Heart began engineering a comeback at 149, closing the gap to nine at 12-3 with a decision and following with another decision at 157 to make it a 12-6 contest.

Freshman Jacob Conners stepped to the mat at 165 and exited with the momentum back on F&M's side after 4-2 OT thriller. Down 2-0 in the closing seconds of the third, Connor landed a clutch takedown to force overtime, eventually closing out the contest and handing the Diplomats a 15-6 advantage.

An early takedown kept Gordon Bolig out in front throughout his matchup at 175 to put F&M ahead by 12, however Sacred Heart answered with a major at 174 and a decision at 184 to put the Pioneers within shouting distance at 18-13 heading into the heavyweight matchup.

Following a scoreless first, Alex Henry took a 2-1 lead into the third and cruised in the final frame for the 6-2 win and the eight-point victory for the Diplomats.

F&M returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Lock Haven to compete at the Mat Town Open.
