OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Franklin & Marshall's Richard Durso took down Maryland's Shyhiem Brown with a 5-2 decision to advance into tonight's second round at the NCAA D1 Championship Tournament.
Tonight's second round is slated for a 7:00 p.m. ET start, where No. 12 Durso will square off against No. 5 Chris Mecate of Old Dominion in the 141-pound bracket, with a spot in the quarterfinals up for grabs. These two grapplers have squared off once before with Mecate coming away with a 3-0 decision victory in the semifinals of the 2013 F&M Open.
Against Brown, Durso opened the first period strong with a takedown on the edge of the circle at just under a minute into the match. Back at center, Brown managed to pick up the reversal with 1:20 to go, tying the bout at 2-2.
Durso escaped just seconds later to take the lead once again at 3-2. Brown went for the takedown with under a minute to go in the period but the Diplomat's junior grappler thwarted the opportunity as time ran out before Brown could gain control.
In the second, Durso chose down and quickly picked up an escape to take the 4-2 lead. Brown went for another shot with under a minute left but Durso again denied the takedown and rode out the rest of the stanza with Brown pinned to the mat.
Brown started the third in the down position and nearly pulled out the early escape by quickly getting to his feet. However, Durso was able to hold onto Brown's leg and force him off the mat to keep control. Back at center, Durso held on for the remaining minute, not allowing Brown to get off the mat and securing the extra point for riding time.
