EVANSTON, Ill. – Richard Durso and Andrew Murano competed for the Franklin & Marshall wrestling team in day one of the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University on Sunday afternoon.
Durso started off the championship bracket of 141 with two-straight victories that included a pin against Bryant Schafer of Indiana before an 8-3 decision over Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin.
Ranked No. 2 in the bracket and No. 5 in the nation, Durso squared off with the nation's No. 13 wrestler in Josh Dziewa of Iowa in the quarterfinals. However Durso suffered his first lost of the season (15-1) after falling to the Big 10 product with a 6-1 decision.
In the 157 bracket, Murano dropped his opening bout by a 10-2 score against Brandon Zeerip of Eastern Michigan before responding with three-straight decisions in the consolations. He started his run with a 9-6 win over Kyle Mosier of Purdue, followed by an 11-6 decision before taking down Tyler Grimaldi of Harvard by an 8-6 margin.
Murano's tournament came to an end in the next round after being pinned by No. 15 Zac Brunson of Illinois.
The action continues tomorrow with the third session, semifinals, consolation matches and seventh place matches at noon (1:00 p.m. EST). Durso will take on Danny Sabatello of Purdue in the consolations of 141. The finals, along with the third and fifth place matches are set for tomorrow at 9:00 EST, all of which will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
