DES MOINES, Iowa - Richard Durso advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a 5-4 victory over Nick Dardanes from Minnesota in Thursday night's second round.
Durso, seeded ninth, took down eighth-seeded Dardanes with an escape in overtime. Knotted at 4-4 after three periods of tough wrestling that featured several stoppages due to blood time, Durso and Dardanes went scoreless in the first period of overtime. In the first 30-second tiebreaking period, Durso started down and got out with less than 10 seconds left to take a 5-4 advantage, before riding out Dardanes for the narrow victory.
The two exchanged takedowns early in the first period with both earning escapes to close out the period tied at 3-3. Dardanes grabbed his first lead with an escape at the start of period two, but Durso earned an escape of his own to open the third and send the bout into overtime.
Next up for Durso (39-3) is top-seeded Hunter Stieber (33-0) of Ohio State, who defeated Harvard's Steven Keith 7-3 in the second round. Durso and Stieber met in the opening round of last year's championships, with Stieber coming away with a 4-2 triumph.
The quarterfinal round will get underway tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. EST. Durso's match will be broadcast on ESPNU.
