DES MOINES, Iowa - Richard Durso advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a victory by decision over Wyoming's McCade Ford in Thursday's opening round. Durso, seeded ninth at 141 pounds, downed Ford by a 6-1 margin to advance to tonight's round of 16.
Durso took control of the match from the outset, scoring a takedown 1:50 into the first period, before riding out Ford for the remainder of the frame. In the second, Durso chose down and registered a quick escape to nab a 3-0 lead, and later in the period pushed out to a 5-0 edge with another takedown. Ford managed to get on the board with an escape at the beginning of the third, but he would get no closer and Durso's riding time earned him the 6-1 victory.
The F&M sophomore will square off against eighth-ranked Nick Dardanes of Minnesota, a 12-3 major decison victor over Iowa State's Luke Goettl. With today's first round win, Durso has now won 16 straight and enters tonight's bout sporting a 38-3 overall mark, while Dardanes is 26-7 on the year.
Second round action begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST. Four of the eight mats of action at the Wells Fargo Arena will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.com. To watch, click here.
