MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall posted a 2-1 record to grab second in a field of seven teams at the Mid Penn Duals hosted by Millersville on Saturday. The Diplomats defeated Gloucester County College (47-6) and Shippensburg (19-16) before falling to York (Pa.) (22-16) in the championship match.
In the championship against York, the Diplomats and Spartans battled back and forth in a match that featured two ties and four lead changes. After York took the initial lead with a major decision at 125 pounds, Ruiz and Durso registered consecutive wins at 133 and 141, respectively, to give F&M a 10-4 advantage. Ruiz pinned Joey Glaccio in 51 seconds, while Durso topped Chuck Glatz with a 9-1 major decision.
The Spartans then tied things up at 10-10 with a pair of victories by decision, before Rob King delivered a 4-2 decision over Drew Spector at 165 to help F&M re-claim the lead, 13-10. From there, York captured three of the final four bouts en route to the win. Chuckie Kerkesner recorded F&M's final points of the match at 285 with a 6-4 victory by decision against Mike Spencer.
In the semifinals, the Diplomats and Shippensburg went neck-and-neck as the seven of the 10 bouts came down to decision. Five of F&M's six wins were decisions, with Murano posting the only Diplomat bonus points with a major decision at 149. Aaron Moldoff (125) nabbed a 7-1 win over Dave Calambas, before the Raiders registered a major decision at 133 to take the lead, 4-3. Durso responded for F&M with a 4-1 decision over Cody Myers, before Murano claimed his 15-5 major decision over Ean Starner and Norgard edged Neal Grudi 3-2 at 157 to push the Diplomats out to a 13-4 lead.
The Raiders pulled within 13-10 with a win by fall at 165, but Colin Lahiff (174) and Cromwell (197) each earned wins by decision down the stretch and the Diplomats came away with the victory. Lahiff downed Dylan Treaster 6-2, while Cromwell turned back Francis Slover 5-3.
F&M captured nine of 10 bouts in its opener against Gloucester, securing two pins, two major decisions, a decision and four forfeits as the outcome was never in doubt in the 41-point triumph. Ruiz and Cromwell notched wins by fall, Durso and Murano tallied major decision wins, and Norgard earned a victory by decision.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow at the Millersville Open.
