Diplomats Down Davidson

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall captured five of the first six bouts and held off a late Davidson charge en route to a 20-16 victory on Friday night at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats move to 4-2 with the win and snap a four-match losing streak in the all-time series, while the Wildcats drop to 5-3.

In the first bout of the night at 125 pounds, Davidson's Philip Elias edged Aaron Moldoff in a matchup that came down to the wire, 7-5, but the Diplomats rolled in the ensuing five bouts to take a commanding 20-3 advantage.

Robert Ruiz shifted the momentum in F&M's favor at 133 with a 16-8 major decision over Anthony Elias. Ruiz registered three takedowns in period one, a takedown and three-point nearfall in the second frame, and recorded a key escape with just five seconds remaining in the final period that gave him, along with his 1:23 of riding time, the major decision win.

At 141, Richard Durso improved to 24-3 on the year with a pin in 4:58 against Sejiro Littleton. Durso dominated from the start, delivering a takedown and a pair of three-point nearfalls in the first period and shutting out Littleton until he finished him off late in period two.

Andrew Murano (149) and Rob King (165) posted wins by decision for F&M, sandwiched by a major decision from Eric Norgard (157). Murano and Kevin Birmingham tussled back and forth at 149, but a late takedown and 1:56 of riding time proved to be the difference for the F&M junior. Norgard methodically blanked Nathaniel Powers with an 8-0 major decision, earning three takedowns and nearly six minutes of riding time, while King outlasted Chis Cirenza 5-3 to push the Diplomats out to a 17-point lead with four bouts to go.

The Wildcats attempted to make a late comeback as they secured victories at each of the final four weight classes, but the Diplomats effectively kept the visitors from acquiring the necessary bonus points to overcome the large deficit.

The Diplomats return to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Mid Penn Duals hosted by Millersville. F&M opens the double-elimination tournament against Thaddeus Stevens at 9:00 a.m.
