NEW YORK – Franklin & Marshall dropped a pair of dual meets, falling 36-12 to Rider and 41-7 to Columbia on Saturday. The Diplomats (0-8, 0-5 EIWA) forfeited three weights on the afternoon.
F&M's 174-pounder, Matt Fullowan (18-11), was the Diplomats' only double-winner, posting a pair of impressive decisions. The junior broke a 4-4 tie with a quick takedown of Rider's (6-9) Rob Morrison, nearly putting him on his back. Morrison evaded the pin, but was unable to work free during the closing seconds of the bout, giving Fullowan the 6-4 win.
After a scoreless first period with Columbia's (6-4, 2-0 EIWA) Stephen West, Fullowan escaped off of the second period whistle and extended his lead to 3-0 with a takedown. He managed to work 1:25 on the riding clock to finish the match with a 4-2 win. Fullowan's second win of the day followed Anthony Bongarzone's 10-2 major decision of the Lions' Nick Standish.
Standish got the early jump with a takedown after a long scramble, but it was his only offense in the bout. Bongarzone reversed him late in the first period before working a three-point cradle that was spoiled by the buzzer. It was all Bongarzone the rest of the way. The senior secure a pair of takedowns and an escape to extend his lead.
Bucha hit a late bull-rush double to break a 5-5 tie with Rider's Jeremy Kirchner. Kirschner had elected to work from the bottom in the final period, but took 70 seconds to finally work free, giving Bucha the advantage prior to the takedown. It was the 70th victory of Bucha's career. He is only the tenth Diplomat to reach 70 wins in a career, and is tied with Rob Nusum'90 in career wins at F&M.
Bucha and Columbia's Penn Gottfried went two periods without putting a point on the board, but the Diplomats' senior needed only a second to escape in the third. He was taken down with 1:10 left in the third, but got free nine seconds later forcing overtime. Gottfried managed an escape in the first tiebreaker period, and Bucha was on the verge of one in the second. As he tried to work free, he came up on the wrong end of a scramble.
Canfield failed to finish a headlock throw on of Rider's Evan Craig on the first attempt and ended up taking himself down. His second attempt went more smoothly, putting Rider's heavyweight on his back. Canfield locked up the pin at 1:42. He was pinned by Columbia's Kevin Lester midway through the second period.
F&M returns to action on Friday against Campbell.
