MEDFORD, Mass. – Evan Friend and Logan Lewis both returned to action for Franklin & Marshall on Friday at the Tufts Last Chance Meet. Team scores were not kept, but the meet offered Lewis and Friend the opportunity to secure berths at the NCAA Championships next weekend in Grinnell, Iowa.
Lewis, competing in the shot put, entered the weekend looking to improve on his distance of 52'-1.75" which was good for 20th in the nation, just outside of the qualifying range. The sophomore's performance on Friday greatly increased his odds of traveling to Iowa, claiming second place with a throw of 53'-6.25". The effort moved Lewis into 12th place in the nation, which at the time of completion was good for a spot in the national competition.
Friend entered the weekend with the nation's 12th fastest time in the 200-meter dash (22.15), placing him in position for a berth at the NCAA Championships. The senior looked to further secure his place in Iowa, but ultimately finished in third with a time of 22.38. While his time did not propel him higher up the national rankings, Shane Chiaravalle of Stevens Institute of Technology took first with a time of 22.35, which allowed Friend to retain his 12th rank at the time of completion.
Lewis and Friend both hope to reach the NCAA Championships, which take place next Friday and Saturday at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.
