LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's men's swimming team delivered a record-breaking season during its 2017-18 campaign. The Diplomats took fourth at the Centennial Conference (CC) Championships and broke 11 program records for both individual and relay events throughout the season.
F&M earned 12 medals at CC Champs, four relays and eight individual, which is the most since the 2010 title team. The Medley Relay teams of Alec Wahl '21, Ryan Caffrey '18, Eric Dietrich-Peterson '20, and Christopher Schiavone '21 brought home the gold in the 200 and the silver in the 400. Schiavone and Dietrich-Peterson also teamed up with Timothy Gould '19 and Keith Kamons '19 to take second in both the 200 and 400-yard Freestyle Relays.
Schiavone tallied three individual medals in the 50, 100, and 200-yard Freestyle. Dietrich-Peterson notched two more individual medals for the 100 and 200-yard Butterfly events. Wahl and Gould represented F&M in the Backstroke events with Wahl coming away with two medals, and Gould secured first in the 100-yard Backstroke.
Schiavone's finishes in all three freestyle events qualified the freshman for competition at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. from March 21-25. This marked the first time since 2010 the men's team had a qualifier. Schiavone's highest seed was in the 50-yard Freestyle where his 20.40 finish at CC Champs placed him 15th. Schiavone competed in the prelims for each event, but was unable to reach the finals.
The Diplomats opened their season by sweeping York and Messiah with Eric Lang '18 leading the way in the breaststroke events and Wahl and Schiavone dominating in their rookie debuts.
F&M opened the new year with back-to-back wins, first beating Susquehanna 157-105 and then downing McDaniel 60-26.
The men's team continued to garner post-season accolades by being named a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
