Diplomats Still First, Swarthmore Still Strong

Saturday Finals Results

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall claimed gold medals in six of the seven events raced on Saturday evening to maintain the Diplomats lead at the 2010 Centennial Conference (CC) Championships heading into the meet's third and final day. Swarthmore kept pace, and is remains in second place, 65.5 points behind F&M, which is looking to wrap up a sixth consecutive championship and eighth overall.

Not content with the meet and conference record established this morning, nor with the seed time of his NCAA automatic qualifier in that race, Tom Grabiak took down his own mark. He rewrote the record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a blistering 55.98, 3.48 seconds faster than silver medalist, Ed Barnard of Dickinson.

Grabiak's lone fellow senior on the squad, Matt Jaffee, got in on the record-breaking act. His 51.36 reset the meet and conference benchmark in the 100-yard backstroke. It was also an NCAA B-Cut time. Last year's champ, David Fell, placed fourth, while Jonathan Friere finished 13th.

After breaking records separately, Grabiak and Jaffee teamed up with Conor Finnegan and Jake Reingold to reset the conference and meet mark in the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay.  Their 6:59.30 was good enough for a gold medal and four second cushion on the field.  Reingold led off with a B-Cut time in his 200-yard freestyle leg. He covered the distance in 1:42.55, the fastest, 200 of the night. Reingold took second in the 200-yard freestyle behind team and classmate, Tom Bergstrom to add to that pair of freshmen's rapidly growing collections. The Diplomats were eye-to-eye coming to the wall with Bergstrom clocking a 1:43.91 and Reingold coming in .05 seconds behind. Conor Finnegan gave F&M seventh place points in the race.

F&M set the tone in the night's first race when the 200-yard medley relay team of Jaffee, Grabiak, David Apple and Tom Bergstrom posted an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:43.32 for Centennial gold. Travis Catania continued the Diplomats' early run collecting a gold medal in the night's first race, the 400-yard individual medley. Catania swam a 4:14.46 to stem the tide of three Garnet swimmers. Swarthmore took the silver and bronze, as well as fifth and eighth place. With F&M's Eliot Scymanski placing fifth. The scoring depth in the race continued into the consolation finals. Max Blum in 10th place and Levi Schy in 12th served as bookends around Swat's Danny Friel. Reid Wilkening also scored for Swat as did Jeremy Tourish for F&M.

Gettysburg's Matt Libby prevented a clean sweep of the night for F&M. The Bullets' sophomore edged F&M's Zach Wilt by nearly a second in the 100-yard fly. Libby touched in 51.27, followed by Wilt at 52.23. Apple scored fifth place points, while Mason Wash and Scott Rownd scored in the consolation finals.

The Diplomats return to the pool for the final day of competition. Preliminaries are set for 10:00 a.m with the finals set for 6:00 p.m. You can follow all of the action with free live video and real-time updates through GoDiplomats.com.
