Franklin & Marshall trailed Gettysburg by two points after four races, but the Diplomats (6-5, 6-0 CC) won six of the last seven races to knock off the Bullets (6-3, 5-1 CC) 117-88 in Centennial Conference swimming action on Saturday. The win completed Franklin & Marshall's second-straight season without a loss in conference competition. The Diplomats have now won 16-straight dual meets with conference foes.
The victory also marked Gettysburg's first setback in Centennial competition this season.
Gettysburg grabbed an early lead with strong efforts in the 1,000 and 200-yard freestyles. The Bullets took three of the five scoring positions in the 1,000, paced by Pat McDevitt's 10:19.53.Gettysburg scored 14 points in the race to knot the meet at 18-18. Adam Taft and Matt Rush took first and second places in the 200 for Gettysburg, giving the guests their first and only lead of the afternoon, 32-23.
Matt Wood's sparked the F&M surge with a .48 second win in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a 22.20 in front of Gettysburg's Drew Close. Third and fifth place points from David Apple and Ken Dautrich got the Diplomats back within two, 38-36. Woods and Close battled again in the 100-yard freestyle with Woods winning in 48.39. Close clocked a 48.93.
Tom Grabiak gave the lead back to F&M with a convincing win in the 200-yard butterfly. Grabiak swam a blistering 1:57.32, easily besting his own mark for the top time in the Centennial this season. Grabiak was the only swimmer to touch in less than two minutes. His previous best was a 1:59.99. Grabiak added a 4.59 second win in the 200-yard breaststroke. He finished the race in 2:12.10.
Grabiak, Apple, Woods and Matt Jaffee delivered a win in the day's first event, the 400-yard medley relay. The Diplomats' foursome swam a 3:36.97 to best Gettysburg's combo at 3:39.05. Apple joined Conor Finnegan, Fell, and J.P. Kelly for a win in the final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Diplomats are idle until the Centennial Conference championships, which will be hosted by F&M from February 20th through the 22nd.
