LANCASTER, Pa. –The Franklin & Marshall men's squash team was announced as the winner of the 2015 Sloane Award, giving annually for team sportsmanship. The Diplomats earned the distinction for the first time and shared this year's honor along with Williams College.
It marks the second time in head coach Gavin Jones' tenure that an F&M squad garnered a sportsmanship accolade, with the women's team earning the honor's equivalent, the Chaffee Award, in 2012.
First given in 1981, the award is named in honor of Sean Sloane, a former nationally ranked player and prior long-time coach at Williams. The distinction is presented to teams that, as judged by their peers, best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season.
Coaches discuss with their teams which team they feel is deserving of the award, with each team casting a single vote. The voting is conducted online and opens a few days prior to the National Team Championships. For a history of the honor and a list of past winners, click here.
Several Diplomats will return to the court on Friday to compete at the CSA Individual Championships, hosted by Princeton. More information on the three-day tournament will be made available on GoDiplomats.com later in the week.
