SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Jason Tonelli torched Swarthmore's defense with three goals, leading the No. 7 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team to a 3-1 road victory against the Garnet on Saturday evening.
The contest served as the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both squads and saw the Diplomats improve to 5-0-2, 1-0 CC while Swarthmore dropped to 3-3, 0-1 CC.
Tonelli's hat trick was the first for F&M since Ben Beaver tallied three against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sept. 6, 2013.
Just 13 minutes into the first half, Tonelli stuck for his first score when Ugo Okolie fed the junior forward on the right side, who finished far post for the 1-0 lead.
In the 21st, Jeremy Levine sent a long ball to just outside the six-yard box that found Tonelli again, who this time, headed in his attempt past the Garnet 'keeper.
F&M kept the pressure on throughout the remainder of the frame, edging Swarthmore in shots at 10-4.
Tonelli completed his hat-trick effort in the 59th minute of the second, ripping a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that made its way over the goalkeeper, before finding a home in the top center of the net.
Swarthmore managed to get on the board in the 79th on a chip shot from the far right side but was unable to pull any closer. Shots favored the Diplomats at 21-7 for the game while corners were more closely-contested at 3-2 for F&M.
F&M returns to non-conference action on Wednesday when No. 10 Rowan (7-0) heads to Lancaster for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
