RICHMOND, Va. – Sean Rogers delivered the game-winning goal just 1:14 in overtime to give No. 12 Franklin & Marshall a 10-9 victory over No. 6 Cortland in men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 5-1 while the Red Dragons dropped to 3-1.
F&M went ahead early with goals from Harry Rice and Luke Keating six minutes into the game. Cortland responded with two of their own and tied the game at 2-2 and Sean Rogers put one through at the end of the first to give F&M a 3-2 edge heading into the second.
The Red Dragons netted three straight in the first four minutes of the second for a 5-3 lead at 11:08. Jarrett Donaghy brought F&M within a point, but Cortland quickly answered and retook a two-goal edge, 6-4, with 6:10 remaining. Kevin Mollihan brought F&M within a point, 6-5, with a goal at 4:21, which remained the score heading into the break.
Mollihan tied the game early in the third at 6-6, but Cortland countered with two scores and took an 8-6 lead. Mollihan picked up his third with a score at 1:52 off a feed from George Briggs to bring F&M within a goal, 8-7, heading into the final frame.
Mollihan picked up his fourth goal 56 seconds into the fourth to tie the game at 8-8 and Cortland matched two minutes later to retake the lead, 9-8, with 12:42 on the clock. Harry Rice had the equalizer at 2:11 to make it 9-9, and both teams saw multiple shots the remainder of the quarter, but could not connect, sending the game in overtime.
Timmy Hoarty won the opening faceoff in the extra quarter and F&M called a timeout at 3:50 to set up the offense. A little more than a minute later Rogers netted the game-winner to seal the victory for F&M.
Scott Hatch turned away seven shots and improved to 5-1 in net.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M hosts Elizabethtown at 1:00 p.m.
