LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 11 Franklin & Marshall fell 12-10 to Washington & Lee in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Shadek Stadium. The loss is the first for F&M this season as the Diplomats dropped to 3-1 while the Generals improved to 2-3.
W&L jumped out to an early four-goal lead four minutes into the game. Kevin Mollihan put the Diplomats on the board with a tally at 5:21 to make it 4-1 heading into the second quarter. Teddy Bossidy and Harry Rice netted back-to-back goals to bring F&M within a point, 4-3, but the Generals responded with three straight to take a 7-3 lead at 1:27. Mollihan struck again with a little more than a minute to play to make it 7-4 at the break.
The Generals netted four straight to open the third quarter and took an 11-4 lead midway through the third. F&M answered with two of its own to end the quarter trailing 11-6. Mollihan and Luke Keating netted the goals for the Diplomats.
F&M continued its run into the fourth with three more in the opening four minutes. Sean Rogers put the first two through and Harry Rice buried a pass from George Briggs to make it 11-9. W&L went up 12-9 at 11:20 and Mollihan scored at 9:36 to make it 12-10. F&M had some good looks down the stretch but were unable to connect.
Kevin Mollihan ended with four goals, Sean Rogers and Harry Rice both netted two while Teddy Bossidy and Luke Keating all struck once. George Briggs had three helpers and Tucker McBride, along with Rogers, both had an assist.
Ellis Llewellyn paced the defense with four caused turnovers and Doug Mongiardo had two. Tommy O'Connor caused two turnovers and ended with six ground balls. Scott Hatch took the loss with 11 saves and dropped to 3-1.
F&M held a slight 32-31 edge in shots, while the General led 37-34 in ground balls.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M hosts Messiah at 1:00 p.m.
