LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's golf team is getting ready to participate in the 2014 NCAA Tournament next week. The four-day, 72-hole event will be held May 13-16, at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Diplomats received one of 31 automatic qualifier bids for their ninth NCAA appearance after a dominating the Centennial Conference (CC) Championship where F&M swept all the major awards and smashed a handful of records. The CC Crown is the sixth for F&M, fifth in the last seven years and the program's 12th overall conference championship.
Dave Gilbert, Brad Lankler and Robert Svigals tied at 233 to earn medalist honors, the first tri-medalist in CC history, and a spot on the All-CC First Team, while Lankler was named Rookie of the Year and coach Andy Tompos picked up Coach of the Year honors. Gilbert set a CC record as he came from five shots behind on day three and finished at even par-71, which equaled the lowest round in CC Tournament history.
The Diplomats carded a 54-hole team total of 899 - bettering the old mark of 917 set last season by McDaniel. F&M fired two rounds under 300 - the first time any Centennial team has gone lower than 300 in a championship - posting a 293 on Saturday and 299 on Sunday.
