A Little History: The John Troxell era enters season number 13 as the Diplomats prepare to embark on the 131st campaign since F&M first hit the grid circuit in October of 1887. The Diplomats posted a winning record in 74 seasons and a losing record in 48 seasons. Eight seasons saw the Diplomats finish at .500. F&M went undefeated and untied in four seasons (1950, 1964, 1972, 1974), and was undefeated with one tie in 1945. The Diplomats suffered through five seasons without a win: 1887, 1904, 1926, 1962, and 2000. The 1926 season saw F&M post one tie.
First Game Facts: Franklin & Marshall is 73-54-3 in its season openers. The first opening-day win came in the second season that F&M hit the field (1889) with a 60-0 win over cross-town rival, Millersville. F&M lost its first opening-day game at the York Y.M.C.A, 9-0 on October 10, 1887. Those were the first pair of the 51 opening-day games that have been shutouts.
F&M is 22-28-1 in season openers that have seen a side shutout, including 2008's 24-0 blanking of Washington & Lee, avenging the 20-0 shutout at the hands of the Generals the season prior. The lone tie was a 0-0 barn burner between F&M and Delaware, at Delaware, on October 4, 1919.
F&M's largest margin of victory and highest point total on opening day came in a 69-0 shutout of the crew of the U.S.S. Connecticut on September 27, 1913. The largest margin of defeat and most points scored against F&M in a season opener came in a 66-0 loss at Fordham on October 2, 1937.
The Diplomats are 9-3 in season openers under John Troxell.
Rankings: Franklin & Marshall enters the 2018 season ranked 24th in the D3football.com Preseason Poll.
Series History: From 1899 to 1982 F&M and LVC competed in 35 contests. The series was intermittent before a 15-year stretch from 1968 to 1982 when the schools met each season as members of the Middle Atlantic Conference. In 1983, the Diplomats left to join the newly minted Centennial Conference, leaving with a winning record between the teams of 25-8-1. Since the series revival in 2014, F&M won all four contests, increasing the series record to 29-8-1.
The Last Meeting: Franklin & Marshall picked up a decisive 48-7 opening-day victory over Lebanon Valley in football action to open up 2017.
F&M finished with 333 yards while its defense limited the Dutchmen to just 121 yards of offense.
Tanner Erisman completed 20-of-24 passes for 212 yards and four scores. He added another 55 yards on nine rushes with one score. K.J. Pretty hauled in six passes for 108 yards and two scores while Dillon Alderfer ended the day with 69 yards on eight grabs with one touchdown. Taalib Gerald netted 37 yards on 11 touches with one touchdown for the Diplomats.
Quick Look at F&M: F&M returns 14 starters from last year's squad that put together one of the best seasons in program history. F&M closed down a historic field with one of 10 wins on the season while christening a new stadium with a Centennial Conference (CC) Title. The Diplomats won both rivalry games and capped off the year with a Bowl Championship, thanks in large part to contributions made by the team's 15 All-Conference selections – the most in the history of the program.
