BETHLEHEM, Pa. –- Moravian turned five turnovers into 31 points in the first half and held off a late rally to defeat Franklin & Marshall 52-42 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action Saturday afternoon. The win was the first this season for the Greyhounds as they improved to 1-6, 1-5 CC while the Diplomats dropped to 4-3, 4-2 CC.
Moravian jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The Greyhounds first score came after an interception midway through the first and the Diplomats misplayed the ball on the ensuing kickoff, giving the ball back to Moravian. Eight plays later, David Fiumara connected on a 23-yard field goal for the 10-0 score.
Aaron Fant gave the Diplomats their first score of the game when he picked off a pass and took it 12 yards to the house to make it 10-7 with 1:39 left in the first.
Things got worse for F&M in the second quarter as the Greyhounds converted two fumbles and another interception into 21 unanswered points. 14 of those points occurred 10 seconds apart before the Diplomats were able to punch one into the endzone.
Jordan Zackery return a kickoff 44 yards to the F&M 45 and E.J. Schneider hooked up with Paul McGann for a 54-yard play to the Moravian one. Scott LaValva took it from there with a one-yard plunge to make it 31-14 with 1:31 left to the break.
The Greyhounds responded with an eight play, 73-yard drive capped off with five-yard score to make it 38-14 at the break.
F&M struck first in the third quarter when Schneider found Tim Muller for a one-yard score that finished off a nine play, 85-yard drive. Moravian countered on its next possession with a quick score to make it 45-21.
The Diplomats made it 45-28 on their next series with Schneider took it in from a yard out with 39 seconds left in the third before Moravian put seven more on the board midway through the fourth quarter to make it 52-28.
F&M added 14 more points in the final 5:13 of action, but were unable to recover any of the two onside kicks and ran out of time. Schneider connected with McGann for the first score and found Muller for the last F&M touchdown.
Schneider completed 31-of-49 passes for 369 yards with three scores and three interceptions. He added another 50 on 10 rushes.
Brendan Daly picked up 43 yards on nine carries and LaValva had 40 yards and a score.
McGann hauled in 10 passes for a game-high 164 yards and Zackery finished with 129 yards on nine catches. Muller caught four passes for 14 yards and two touchdowns.
Billy Zwicharowski was a perfect 6-for-6 in PATs.
F&M returns home next Saturday when the Diplomats take on Susquehanna at 12:00 p.m.
