LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College’s Head Football Coach, John Troxell, announced the captains for the 2009 season. Seniors, George Eager (Lititz, Pa. / Manheim Twp.), Barry Lovett (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Poly Prep), Ryan Murray (Sebastian, Fla. / St. Edward’s) and junior, Mark Surma (Philadelphia / Central) will lead the 122nd edition of the Diplomats into battle when the season opens on Saturday at Washington & Lee in Lexington, Virginia.
“These young men have earned the respect of their teammates and coaching staff through both word and deed,” said Troxell.
All four captains bring impressive football credentials to the title. Eager and Lovett are both returning all-conference selections, while Murray and Surma have been regulars in the lineup over the past two seasons.
Eager was an All-Centennial First Team choice at kick returner and a Second Team selection last year at receiver after catching 51 passes for 637 yards and six touchdowns.
Lovett will start for the fourth year coming off of an All-Centennial First Team season. He recorded a pair of interceptions and broke up four passes to go along with a forced fumble in 2008.
Murray ended his 2007 season with one of the top rushing performances on record at F&M, but struggled to regain that form after a leg injury in last summer’s camp. He still managed 3.4 yards per carry on the season, and broke out for 74 yards on 10 carries in the season finale at Gettysburg.
Along the new look defensive line, Surma is the most experienced with 16 games through his first two years, including nine starts last year. Surma recorded 26 stops, including two for losses working in the senior-laden rotation last year.
F&M will tee it up against W&L on
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Diplomats return to Lancaster for their
home opener against Catholic University on Saturday, September 12.
