Franklin & Marshall's men's rowing team continued its ascent as one of the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference's (MARC) top programs in 2018, earning several weekly accolades due to top performances throughout the regular season, before capping off the year with notable showings at the MARC Championships and prestigious Dad Vail Regatta.
At the annual MARC Championships on April 28, the Diplomats placed fourth out 10 teams - the best finish since the adoption of the event's current format in 2016. F&M accumulated 33 points on the day for the top finish by a Division III institution and ahead of Marietta (30), George Mason (24), Lafayette (6), Loyola (4), Stockton (2), and Maryland (1).
The Diplomats' season officially drew to a close on May 11-12 when F&M advanced two of its boats into the Petite Finals at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
F&M competed in four spring events leading up to the MARC Championships. The First Varsity 8+ boat was successful throughout and earned two-straight MARC Crew of the week accolades in April. The first award was given to the Diplomats in honor of the boat's duel victory over Vassar on March 31, winning the race by more than 20 seconds. F&M followed by downing Rochester the following weekend in a head-to-head battle that saw the Diplomats best the Yellow Jackets by more than seven seconds.
Zerubabbel Asfaw '20, Joel Cannon '19, Trexler Hirn '18, Sean Hyland '18, and Ngoun Lay '19 were named MARC Academic All-Conference, which is awarded to rowers who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, are in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, and have competed in 75 percent of the varsity competitions or the MARC Championships.
