CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington defeated Franklin & Marshall 74-69 in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The win puts Washington at 10-11, 6-8 CC on the season, while the Diplomats fell to 12-9, 6-8 CC.
Scoring came at a premium in the early going with Washington leading 10-6 in the first five of the game. F&M netted five straight for an 11-10 edge, and held a 15-13 lead with 12:24 left in the first. Eleven lead changes occurred during the next 11 minutes of action with the game tied a 34-34 with 1:23 left in the half. The Shoremen closed out the half with a 4-0 spurt for a 38-34 lead at the break.
Washington opened the second with a 9-4 run and took a 47-38 lead at 16:54. The Shoremen continued to hold the lead with a 56-49 advantage with a little under 10 minutes left to play, before the Diplomats had a 6-2 spurt to come within three, 58-55, at 7:17. The Diplomats stayed close and came within two, 65-63, at 2:27 and a Justin Kupa jumper with 46 ticks on the clock made it 69-67. The teams exchanged baskets for a 71-69 score and Washington netted three in the final 10 seconds to secure the win.
Justin Kupa had a team-high 21 points to along with six assists and five rebounds, while Solomon Mathis poured in 20 off the bench. J.C. McGrath netted 10 with five rebounds and Matt Redhead recorded six boards with seven points.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday traveling to Dickinson for a 7:30 p.m., before returning to the Mayser on Saturday with a showdown against Muhlenberg on Senior Day.
