F&M takes on Delaware Valley for the fourth time on Saturday in the Sponaugle New Years Tournament. The Diplomats are 2-1 against the Aggies, including an 89-62 win in last year's championship game. The Diplomats will face either Keene State or Rowan on Sunday. F&M has never played Keene State and would face Rowan for just the third time with the series tied at 1-1.
The idea of what is now the Sponaugle New Years Tournament was originated in March 1966. The idea was to create an event that would bring together area college basketball teams in an annual "tip-off" tournament. This year marks the 50th Tournament.
The first tournament was played in December 1967, seven months after S. Woodrow "Woody" Sponaugle died. With the permission of his family, the tournament was named in his memory. Traditionally a tip-off tournament, this is the 12th time in 14 years it starts off the new year to mark the end of the holiday break, and the start down the road toward Salem.
Tickets for the tournament are: $6 for an adult per day and $3 for students w/ I.D. per day.
Last Time Out
F&M ended the first half of the season with a 1-1 week. The Diplomats edged Haverford 63-60 on Dec. 5, before falling to McDaniel 62-59 on Dec. 8.
