HAVERFORD, Pa. – A Les Thomas triple in the final 30 seconds helped deliver Franklin & Marshall a 63-60 over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening. The Diplomats improved to 6-2, 3-1 CC, while the Fords dropped to 3-5, 1-3 CC.
F&M took a 6-4 edge four minutes into the contest and held a 15-10 advantage on a Matt Redhead layup with 12:46 showing. The Fords stayed close and took a 19-18 lead at 9:43, but F&M countered a 9-0 run to go up 27-19. F&M continued to control the pace and went into the break with a 12-point lead, 39-27.
Haverford opened the second with a 15-8 run and made it a five-point game, 47-42, at 13:32. The Fords came within a point, 49-48, and F&M quickly went ahead five. The Fords stayed within striking distance and held a 58-57 lead with 3:49 left to play, before the game was tied at 60-60 with a less than a minute to play. Thomas hit his three with 29 ticks on the clock and F&M's defense was able to force a missed shot to secure the win.
Justin Kupa led the Diplomats with 14 points, hitting 4-for-8 from the line. J.C. McGrath netted 13 to go along with eight boards and Matt Redhead had six points and 11 points. Les Thomas contributed seven off the bench for the Diplomats.
F&M held a 36-31 edge on the boards and converted 17 turnovers into 21 points.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M hosts McDaniel at 3:00 p.m.
