YORK, Pa. – York erased a nine-point halftime deficit to force overtime and outscored Franklin & Marshall 11-7 in the extra period to come away with a 78-74 victory. The Diplomats fall to 3-2, while the Spartans improved to 4-2.
F&M went on top early with a 9-2 edge three minutes into the game and a Bo Williams layup at 11:27 made it 19-10. York netted six straight to come within three, 19-16, but F&M countered with a 15-2 run for a 34-18 lead with a little less than three minutes left in the first. York responded and closed out the half with an 11-2 spurt to make it 36-27 at the break.
A Williams triple early in the second put F&M up 39-29, before York netted eight straight to make it a two-point game. The Spartans stayed close and went ahead 45-42, with 13:24 left in the second. York increased their lead to 10, 56-46, but the Diplomats answered with a 12-2 spurt to go back on top, 59-58, at 6:29.
The teams exchanged leads down the stretch, with the Spartans holding onto a 67-63 with a little more than a minute left. Justin Kupa stepped up in the final seconds with a layup and steal that led to the game-tying bucket to send the game into overtime.
York controlled the extra frame, leading throughout the duration to secure the win.
J.C. McGrath led the Diplomats with a double-double after tallying 14 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor and pulling down 14 boards. Justin Kupa netted 13 and Matt Redhead chipped in 12 points with seven rebounds.
York had a 44%-41% edge in shooting percentage, while the Diplomats held a 43-39 edge on the boards and converted 20 turnovers into 20 points.
The Diplomats will look to bounce back when F&M resumes Centennial action against Dickinson at home on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. game.
