LANCASTER, Pa. – Brandon Federici and J.C. McGrath combined for 52 points to lead No. 22 Franklin & Marshall to a 74-68 victory over No. 9 Swarthmore Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) action.
An intense low scoring battle ensued over the first four minutes with Swarthmore leading 4-3. The Diplomats put together a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 10-4 at 11:42. The Garnet answered with an 8-2 run and tied the game at 12-12, but the Diplomats quickly went back on top, 16-12, at 8:55.
The Diplomats increased their lead to six, 24-18, before the Garnet made it a two-point game, 24-22, with a little more than five minutes left. F&M finished the half strong by outscoring the Garnet 10-6 to take a 34-28 lead into the break.
Federici led all scorers in the first with 17 points and McGrath added 10.
Swarthmore came within three, 39-36, before the Diplomats went on a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to go ahead 15, 55-40, with 12:10 left to play. The Diplomats went up 16, 60-44, on a Federici triple, but the Garnet countered with a 13-3 run to come within six, 63-57, at the five-minute mark.
F&M went up nine with 2:17 remaining and the Garnet hit a triple on their next possession to make it a six-point game. The Diplomats held a least a two-possession lead down the stretch to secure the win.
Federici led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 10-of-21 and McGrath finished with 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to Dickinson for an 8:00 p.m. game.
