LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fell 94-82 to Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening. The loss snaps F&M's seven-game winning streak as the Diplomats fell to 14-6, 8-5 CC while the Bears improved to 12-8, 9-4 CC.
Ignas Slyka gave F&M an early 7-5 edge three minutes into the game and hit a triple at 14:58 to put F&M up 13-12. Ursinus put together a 10-2 run and took a 22-15 lead at 11:26. F&M answered with a 9-2 spurt and tied the game at 24-24, before the Bears went back out front and led 39-31 with a little more than three minutes left in the first. The Diplomats battled back and tied the game at 41-41 with a 10-2 run, but the Bears netted the last two points of the half and took a 43-41 lead into the break.
Ursinus hit three straight triples to start the second and increased their lead to 52-41 at 18:39. F&M netted three treys of their own and a free throw from J.C. McGrath brought the Diplomats within a point, 52-51, at 16:29. Ursinus countered by outscoring F&M 12-2 over the next three minutes and went up 64-53. The Bears increased their lead to 12, 73-61, with 8:43 left to play and held a double-digit lead the remainder of the game.
Slyka paced the Diplomats with 25 points hitting 8-of-14 shots from the floor to go along with eight rebounds. Brandon Federici netted 22 while J.C. McGrath ended with 14 points shooting 6-for-7 from the field.
Matt Knowles led Ursinus with 28 points and Zach Quattro had 15. Shane Stark scored 13 off the bench and Brian Rafferty ended with 10.
F&M outshot Ursinus 52-46 percent, but the Bears held a 38-29 margin in rebounds.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M travels to Muhlenberg for a 4:00 p.m. game.
