Series History: Franklin & Marshall travels to Messiah sporting an 8-11-1 overall record on the year. The Diplomats lead the series with the Falcons at 12-7 and have been especially impressive on the road with a 5-2 all-time mark.
Centennial play picks back up on Tuesday with the Diplomats looking to improve on a 3-3 Conference record on the year. F&M has won five of the previous seven games against the Bears and hold a 39-30 edge at home. Swarthmore heads to town on Saturday for the 103rd and 104th all-time meetings in a series that dates back to 1909.
On Sunday, the Diplomats close out the week with a doubleheader at Hood, beginning at 12:00 p.m. These teams met on only one other occasion.
A Look at Messiah: The Falcons enter the week with a 5-12 overall record and have won once in their previous 11 games. Messiah is hitting at a mere .259 clip as a team while its pitching staff has totaled a 4.71 ERA.
A Look at Ursinus: The Bears head into the week with an 8-11, 3-3 CC record after sweeping McDaniel last Saturday by scores of 6-4 and 12-5. Ursinus has struggled from the mound this year and hold the second-highest team ERA in the Centennial at 7.25.
A Look at Swarthmore: The Garnet have been on fire of late and head into the week with a four-game winning streak. Swarthmore is 18-6 overall with a 5-1 CC mark. Offensively, the Garnet have been one of the best in the league as Swarthmore places second among CC teams with a .294 batting average.
A Look at Hood: The Blazers have enjoyed a resurgence in 2018, already bettering their win total from a year ago with a 21-5 mark entering the week. Hood is led by outfielder Cam Esposito, who has accumulated a .420/.478/.630 slash line through 100 at-bats.
A 12th inning walk-off sacrifice fly cost the Diplomats a chance at the series sweep on Friday as F&M fell on the road to Gettysburg by a 4-3 tally. Recap.
The Diplomats saw their game one rally fall short by a 6-4 score before F&M dropped the nightcap by an 8-2 tally against Haverford on Saturday at Caplan Field. Recap.
Milestones to Watch: Senior ace Mike Androconis has accumulated 15 wins in his career, a mark that is tied for eighth-best all-time and places him five shy of the program record (20) held by Ted Serro '06.
Androconis' three complete-game shutouts are tied for second, behind only Serro in first with five, while his 177 strikeouts are fifth all-time. With his 31 career starts, he also is closing in on the program record of 33 held by Alex Guerra '15.
Among the CC Leaders: Freshman Matthew Kann's .389 batting average is first among CC players while classmate Kelsey Launi is eighth with a .373 clip. Dan Marano's three home runs place him tied for fourth entering the week.
On the mound, starter Jack Buckley has accumulated a 3.07 ERA, which is good for 10th among CC leaders. Buckley is also tied for fifth in the Centennial with his three wins. Jonathan Cole's 35 strikeouts rank sixth, while Mike Androconis is tied for seventh with 34.
100 for Marano: With a 2-for-4 effort against No. 15 Southern Maine on March 18, Dan Marano reached the 100-hit milestone for his career.
Closing Time: Reliever Andrew Mascis tossed three shutout frames to record his 16th career save, taking over sole possession of the Centennial Conference's (CC) record in F&M's 5-1 win over York on March 6. His save moved him past Haverford's Charlie Carluccio who set the career mark in 2011.
CC Preseason Poll: F&M was picked to finish third in the CC Preseason Poll. Defending-Champion Johns Hopkins earned the top spot with 80 points and eight first-place votes, followed by Haverford (70 points, 2 first-place votes), F&M (55 points), Ursinus (54 points) and Swarthmore (50 points).
