LANCASTER, Pa. – Down by a run in the bottom of the 12th inning, Franklin & Marshall's baseball team loaded the bases with one out but was unable to get the tying run across the plate, falling to Haverford by a narrow 3-2 score on Friday afternoon at Caplan Field.
The Diplomats dropped to 15-20, 6-10 CC with the decision while the Fords improved to 22-12, 11-5 CC.
Knotted at 2-2 in the top of the 12th, Haverford drew a trio of walks to load the bases with one out. After a foul out behind the plate to catcher Christopher Vincent, the Fords once again reached base on a walk to send the winning run across home plate.
Dan Marano singled to right field to lead off the bottom of the frame. Luke Seib followed later in the inning with a single of his own and reached second on an error by the Fords' left fielder to place runners at second and third with one out.
Mike Smeriglio stepped to the dish and hit a ball to third and Haverford failed to register the forceout at home, allowing the Diplomats to load the bases. However, a popup to short and a groundout to short ended the threat.
F&M scored first in the bottom of the third when Luke Seib plated Reed Williams from third with a two-out RBI single. Haverford followed with runs in the fifth and sixth to go ahead by one before a David Iacobucci RBI double in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch runner William Palmer from second.
Starting pitcher Mike Androconis was brilliant, tossing 7 2/3 frames and allowing just one earned while striking out four. Reliever John Miraglia earned the save for the Fords with a scoreless bottom of the 12th while Luke Bengel (0-3) was charged with the loss.
Luke Seib, Brett Poniros, and Iacobucci paced the Diplomat offense with 2-for-6 showings while Smeriglio went 1-for-3 and drew a trio of walks.
F&M closes out the regular season tomorrow, traveling to Swarthmore for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
