GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's baseball team fell to Gettysburg by a 12-1 score on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) action. The loss dropped the Diplomats to 10-12, 1-2 CC on the year while the Bullets improved to 16-9, 2-1 CC.
The contest remained close heading into the fourth inning, with Gettysburg out in front by a 1-0 score. The Bullets added a pair in the frame with a two-out RBI single up the middle that plated runners from second and third.
In the top of the fifth, F&M cut into the deficit and pulled within one. Tyler Daley and Mike Smeriglio led off with back-to-back singles and Christopher Vincent followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that sent Daley across the dish. However, Gettysburg followed with four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the inning to storm out in front for good at 7-1.
The Bullets furthered the gap with three runs on five hits and a pair of errors in the sixth and rounded out their scoring with a two-run eighth inning. Gettysburg outhit the Diplomats by a 15-6 margin on the day as the Bullets tallied just one extra base hit.
Mack Glavin (1-2) was dealt the loss for F&M, allowing four earned off nine hits in five innings of work. His counterpart, Eric Brown (4-2) earned the win for Gettysburg with a complete-game effort. He allowed only one earned off six hits while striking out one.
Daley registered the Diplomats' lone multi-hit performance, tallying a 2-for-3 line with one run scored. Six Bullets recorded two hits, led by second baseman Steve Wright, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
F&M returns to non-conference competition on Thursday, hosting Penn. St. – Harrisburg for a 3:30 p.m. game at Caplan.
