LANCASTER, Pa. -Alex Vescera notched a career-high five RBIs and was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 9-1 triumph over visiting Washington College in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Caplan Field. The Diplomats move to 16-14, 7-4 CC with the win, while the Shoremen drop to 13-18, 4-7 CC.
Vescera went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, and a single to pace F&M at the plate. The senior shortstop also contributed on the field with a pair of superb catches on line drives by the Shoremen, including a high-leaping grab that resulted in a double play.
Alex Guerra picked up the win on the mound with another solid outing to move to 4-1 on the year. The junior righthander struck out three and allowed only five hits in 7.0 innings. Andrew Green and Gareth Fancher closed out the contest in relief for the Diplomats.
The Diplomats bombarded the Shoremen with runs early on, doing most of their damage with four-run innings in both the second and third frames. Avery Attinson, Brandon Theriault, Rob Anderson, and Vescera each registered RBI hits in the second to give F&M a 4-0 lead.
In the third, F&M put together a two-out scoring barrage as Aaron Gillette poked an RBI single to left that plated Pat Andrews, before Vescera delivered a bases-clearing triple that carried over the left fielder's head and nearly reached the fence to push the lead to 8-0.
Vescera belted his first homer of the year in the fifth, a solo shot to left, to round out the Diplomat scoring.
Kyle Aldrich (3-4) took the loss for Washington, lasting only 3.0 innings while giving up eight runs, four of which were earned.
Sean Connole and Tyler Cotterell both notched two hits on the day for Washington, while Brian Quadrino tallied the Shoremen's lone RBI.
The Diplomats return to CC action on Friday as they travel to Chestertown, Md. to take on Washington College at 3:30 p.m.
