Fords Defeat Diplomats

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford defeated Franklin & Marshall 7-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. The Diplomats fall to 16-18 overall and 5-8 in the CC with the loss, while the Fords even their overall record at 16-16 and move to 8-5 in CC play.

Haverford starter Kevin Goff and reliever Mike Bozzi held the Diplomats in check at the plate, allowing just five hits in the combined shutout. Goff (3-0) twirled a five-hitter through seven innings, striking out three and walking five, while Bozzi pitched the final two frames for the Fords.

F&M's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth. Trailing 1-0, the Diplomats loaded the bases with one out following a single up the middle by Brandon Theriault and back-to-back walks to Rob Anderson and Connor Devlin, but Goff forced a key 4-6-3 double play to end the frame.

The Fords then opened up a 3-0 advantage with two scores in the bottom half of the fourth off a two-RBI double from Justin Coulter, before breaking things open with a four-run sixth for the final score of 7-0.

Matt Valente (2-5) pitched five innings in the loss for the Diplomats. The senior lefthander surrendered four runs on five hits, recording three strikeouts and walking five. Chris Haylon threw two relief innings for F&M, while Alex Guerra tossed a scoreless eighth.

Aaron Gillette went 2-for-3 on the day to pace F&M at the plate. Coulter led the way for the Fords with a 4-for-5 line, four RBIs and one run scored.

F&M returns home to host Haverford on Friday in CC action. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Caplan Field.
