Shoremen's Ninth-Inning Rally Downs Diplomats

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -Washington College scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to turn a one-run deficit into a victory as Franklin & Marshall fell to the Shoremen 3-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday. The Diplomats drop to 16-13, 5-4 CC with the loss, while the Shoremen move to 22-4, 7-2 CC.

Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, starter Matt Valente was just three outs away from a complete-game victory, but the Shoremen put together a two-run rally in the final frame to snatch the win from F&M. Washington managed to load the bases with one out, before Scott Matthews touched home plate from third base after a wild pitch to even the score at 2-2.

The Diplomats forced an infield popup from Nick Marinelli for the second out of the inning, followed by an intentional walk of Sean Connole to load the bases. Jon Mahaffey then tallied the winning RBI with a hit-by-pitch, which allowed Matt Christopher to cross home plate, and the Shoremen walked away with the win.

Valente and Shane Mattingly dueled it out on the mound for the majority of the contest. Valente (2-4) pitched 8.1 innings, allowing seven hits while striking two and walking two. Mattingly (5-0) remained unbeaten with 11 strikeouts and two free passes, surrendering just three hits on the afternoon.

Washington took a 1-0 lead in the third after a sacrifice fly from Ryan Normoyle, before the Diplomats answered with a two-run fourth to take the lead. Will Benenson notched an RBI double in the frame, while Kevin Shields gave F&M the edge with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Benenson led F&M with a 2-for-4 line and one RBI. J.T. Triantos tallied one hit and also scored once for the Diplomats in the loss.

Tyler Cotterell went 2-for-4 for the Shoremen, while Matthews also registered a hit and scored once.
