Benenson Belts Two Bombs; Bats Come Alive in Doubleheader Sweep

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Will Benenson connected for a home run in each game and the Franklin & Marshall bats came to life in a doubleheader sweep over Hamilton in non-conference spring break baseball action on Monday. The Diplomats (5-4) rallied past the Continentals (0-2) for a 10-6 triumph in game one, before cruising to a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

The 10 runs in each contest marked the highest scoring games of the season for the Diplomats, doubling their previous high of 2012.

F&M found itself in an early hole in game one as the Continentals notched two runs in the first and added four more in the second to take a 6-0 advantage. The Diplomats wasted no time responding, however, as they went off for five scores in the bottom of the second - all with two outs - to pull within 6-5.

Mike Giannone opened the F&M scoring with an RBI single to left field that plated Patrick Andrews from second. Aaron Gillette then reached first after hustling out a slow chopper to the right side of the infield, before J.T. Triantos loaded the bags after being hit by a pitch. Benenson followed with a three-RBI double on a rope to the gap in left center, and just like that the Diplomats were within two, 6-4. Kevin Shields rounded out the second-inning scoring for F&M with an RBI single down the left field line that scored Benenson and brought the score to 6-5.

After a scoreless third, the Diplomats took the lead for good with a three-run fourth. Benenson's first homer of the day - a three-run shot - highlighted the frame and gave F&M an 8-6 edge. The Diplomats tacked on insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth to push out to the final 10-6 margin of victory.

Andrew Green was instrumental in the victory on the mound for the Diplomats. Green entered in the second with F&M trailing 6-0 with two outs and in a bases loaded jam, but registered a crucial strikeout to end the frame. The freshman righthander pitched 3.1 shutout frames while fanning three to pick up his first career win. Classmate Chris Haylon tossed the final two innings with one strikeout to earn the save.

Jay Lane suffered the defeat for the Continentals, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.

Game two was a much different story as the Diplomats never trailed after taking a commanding edge with a five-run second. Both sides notched a score in the opening frame, before F&M exploded for five scores in the next inning to take a 6-1 lead. Triantos and Benenson helped the Diplomats make the most of three free passes and two wild pitches by Hamilton starter Joe Jensen. Triantos ripped an two-RBI double down the right field line, while Benenson followed with his second bomb of the day - this time a two-run blast to left - to make it a five-run Diplomat lead.

Evan Lang (2-1) tallied his second win of the year with a solid five innings of work on the rubber in game two. Lang struck out seven while allowing six hits and just one run. Brett Klatsky and Paul Giulio pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to seal the win.

Jensen (0-1) took the loss for Hamilton after surrendering six runs on four hits in just two innings.

Benenson had a career day at the plate for F&M, going 3-for-8 with two homers, eight RBIs and three runs scored throughout the doubleheader. Triantos also had an impressive day with a 6-for-7 line, three RBIs and crossed home plate four times.

The Diplomats return to action tomorrow against Brockport St. at 3:00 pm.
