WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A five-run fifth inning put Rhodes ahead for good as the Lynx won a 17-13 slugfest over Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats (7-7) outhit Rhodes 25-12, but F&M stranded 12 baserunners and committed three errors yielded five unearned runs for the Lynx (16-10).
The Diplomats led 9-7 heading into the fifth, but two hit batsmen and an error led directly to two Rhodes runs in the top of the frame. F&M pitchers hit three batters in the inning and eight in the game. Three of Rhodes' five runs in the inning were unearned.
The Diplomats blew open the game early going up 8-3 after two innings. F&M posted seven runs in the second on nine hits. John Brody doubled to lead off the inning. It was the first of his four hits in the game. Matt Valente was responsible for putting him across.
Matt Will got on board on a single and stole his way to second. He gave the Diplomats the lead, 4-3, on a double steal that followed J.T. Triantos' single that brought Dutton home. Nick Rolnick drove in a pair of runs in the inning with a double. He finished the game with three RBIs. F&M stranded the third and fourth runners of the day in the frame.
Rhodes answered back with four runs in the top of the third. Only the fourth and eighth innings saw a zero go up for both teams.
F&M's Eric Bornstein was 4-for-5 with a home run. Jason Anderson, John Dutton, Triantos and Matt Will each recorded three hits in the loss. Anderson drove in two runs. Will scored three times, while Dutton and Triantos each scored twice. Will stole three bases.
F&M concluded its Spring Break tour with the loss. The Diplomats are set to open their home and Centennial slate on Tuesday with Washington College.
