LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC), in conjunction with Colleges Against Cancer, is sponsoring a marrow donor registry drive on Monday, April 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Mayser Gym main lobby.
The drive is in support of the Be the Match registry, which throughout the past 25 years has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world in a fight against life-threatening blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.
Joining the registry and becoming a potential donor, is a simple process and only requires a participant to complete a registration form (by bringing along a type of personal identification such as a driver's license or passport), and providing a swab of cheek cells.
After signing up in the main Mayser lobby on Monday, stations will be set up in the Mayser Gym to allow participants to fill out the registration form in person, while cheek swab kits will be on hand to complete the process. Students, as well as members of the F&M and the local community, are all welcome to attend the registry drive.
Joining the registry does not mean you are committed to becoming a donor. Not everyone on the Be the Match registry will match and be asked to donate, as the chances of being selected are about 1 in 430. Those chosen will receive all the information needed to make a decision.
