FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Allysan Breece and Emily Gruenberg advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles draws to lead the Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington this past weekend.
Gruenberg made it to the final four of the blue 3 singles draw with a 2-1 mark on the weekend. The sophomore opened with two straight wins, downing Victoria Coffee of Hollins 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and Karolina Lagerquist of Grove City, 8-2. Gruenberg was then edged, 8-6, in the semifinals by Randolph's Reed Kegel.
In the blue 4 singles bracket, Breece topped Randolph-Macon's Melissa Tomlin in a marathon first-rounder, 6-4, 3-6, 15-13, and followed that up by grabbing 9-8(4) triumph over Dickinson's Claire Stoner. Anna Kankanala of Johns Hopkins then ended Breece's run in the semifinals by an 8-5 count.
Tara Buchney and Dana Sleeper also advanced to the final four, putting together a solid weekend in the blue 2 doubles draw. The pair defeated Bridgewater's Holly Knupp and Jessie Mitchell 8-2 and Moravian's Brittney Eady and Katie Zien 8-5, but fell in the semifinals to a team from Hopkins.
Buchney also posted a win in the blue 2 singles draw, taking down Mary Washington's Ashley Price 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, before dropping an 8-2 decision to Moravian's Melissa Follett.
Caitlin Rummelsburg and Nicole Russo both competed in the championship singles draw, while also teaming up in the championship doubles bracket. In singles, the pair of freshmen both dropped their opening round matches, with Russo tallying a consolation draw win, 8-6, before withdrawing due to injury. In doubles, the duo defeated a squad from Randolph, 9-7, but fell 8-4 to a tandem from Hopkins in the second round.
The ITA Regional Championships conclude F&M's fall season. The Diplomats are slated to open their spring campaign on March 1 against Salisbury.
