ORLANDO, Fla. - Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team edged Judson 5-4 in non-conference women's tennis action to conclude its spring break trip to Florida on Thursday. The Diplomats pick up their first win of the year and improve to 1-2, while the Eagles fall to 2-7.
The Diplomats captured two of the three doubles spots in the matchup, which proved to be the difference in the contest as each side took three singles points. The No. 1 tandem of Julia Fiala and Emily Gruenberg topped Judson's Alexa Williams and Marcilynn Rowan with a narrow 9-8 (7-4) decision, while Kyra Forte and Gabrielle Viscounte earned the other doubles win for F&M at the No. 3 position with an 8-6 triumph over Kristen Kress and Marissa Gauss.
In singles, Nina Simic (No. 2), Naomi Smith (No. 3), and Viscounte (No. 6) came away victorious to help the Diplomats come away with the win. Viscounte blanked Angela Schultz 6-0, 6-0, while Smith captured a tight first set and eventually tallied a straight-game win, 7-5, 6-1. Simic outlasted Rowan in three, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-1) in the closest singles showdown of the day.
The Diplomats will return to the court at home next Wednesday against Lebanon Valley at 4:00 p.m.
