FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team opened its fall campaign at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington this past weekend. Seven Diplomats competed in the annual fall championships, including three freshmen making their collegiate debuts on the court.
The tournament featured a championship bracket, which included several nationally ranked players, then seven "Blue" singles and four "Blue" doubles brackets below that.
Emily Gruenberg opened her F&M career with three straight singles wins, advancing to the finals of the Blue 5 singles draw. Guenberg edged Swarthmore's Epiphany English in three sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, 10-4, and Virginia Wesleyan's Victori Torres 6-2, 6-3, before dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the final match.
Dana Sleeper (Blue 3), Nina Simic (Blue 4), Caroline Wood (Blue 6), and Rachel Weinstein (Blue 7) each registered first-round singles victories in their respective flights before falling in the next round. Julia Fiala lost a tight opening round match in the Blue 3 singles draw, but bounced back with two wins to move on to the consolation finals.
In doubles, the duo of Weinstein and Wood made it to the Blue 4 finals. The pair of freshmen topped Muhlenberg's Ashlee Ludwig and Emily Mirkin by a 8-1 count, then defeated Hallie Corbett and Mack Thompson of Meredith 8-2, but fell to the Haverford pair of Celia Tong and Robyn Himelstein 8-2 to nab second.
The doubles squads of Fiala and Meredith Lackey and Gruenberg and Simic each posted first round victories. Fiala and Lackey downed Muhlenberg's Jennifer Goldberg and Emily Szulman by a 8-5 count in the Blue 2 draw, while Gruenberg and Simic bested Virginia Wesleyan's Stephanie Bittner and Torres 8-2.
