F&M Concludes Spring Break Trip 3-3
ORLANDO, Fla. - Franklin & Marshall wrapped up its annual spring break trip to Florida with defeats to St. Lawrence, 7-2, and Wisconsin-Lacrosse, 8-1, before blanking Wisconsin Lutheran, 9-0 to close out the week. The Diplomats are now 3-3 on the year.
Against St. Lawrence, Julia Fiala posted the only singles win for the Diplomats at the No. 5 position, while Katherine Perry and Anya Sahaydachny teamed up for a victory at No. 2 doubles. Fiala took down Shannon Murphy by a 6-4, 6-0 count, and Perry and Sahaydachny tallied an 8-5 win over Elizabeth Geer and Murphy.
The Diplomats then fell to Wisconsin-Lacrosse 8-1 in a match that was much closer than the final score would indicate. Despite Nina Simic being the only F&M victor in singles play, three of the six singles matchups stretched to three sets and two of the doubles points went to tiebreakers. Simic downed Megan Fallon 6-0, 0-6, 10-8 at No. 6 singles for the Diplomats lone point.
F&M concluded its week with a convincing 9-0 triumph over Wisconsin Lutheran. The Diplomats notched straight set wins at five of the six singles spots, and cruised to victories at all three doubles positions.
Fiala blanked Lindsay Gauger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and Perry and Simic dropped just one game in wins at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively. Perry defeated Alyssa Strangstalien 6-1, 6-0, while Simic was triumphant 6-0, 6-1 against Stephanie Kudek. Shannon Littlefield lost only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win against Whitney Stibb at No. 5, while Megan FitzMaurice posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Emily Pearson at No. 2. Sahaydachny rounded out the sweep by outlasting Kathryn Hendee 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 at the No. 1 spot.
In doubles, the teams of Sahaydachny and Fiala (No. 2) and Littlefield and Naomi Smith (No. 3) dropped just one game apiece in 8-1 wins, while FitzMaurice and Dana Sleeper won 8-3 at No. 1.
F&M opens Centennial Conference (CC) play on Saturday, March 24 at Washington College at 12:00 pm.
