Diplomats Capture 2010 Title

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's women entered the third and final night of the 2010 Centennial Conference Championships with an 11-point lead on Gettysburg, by night's end, the lead was quadrupled, and the Diplomats had their third CC crown. It is the first title for F&M's women in swimming since the 2005 season.
F&M's lead was only a dozen points going into the 200-yard butterfly, the meet's final individual race. That was where F&M clinched it, without medaling. Rebecca Rice, Laura Bassford and Emily Zacherl took fourth, fifth and seventh place behind three Washington swimmers in the championship finals that did not feature any members of Gettysburg. While it had no bearing on the on the outcome of the night, F&M took silver in the 400-yard free relay to close out the weekend, slipping in behind Washington and ahead of Gettysburg in the race.
The Diplomats started the night on scoring second and third place points in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Garland Bartlett took silver with an NCAA B-Cut mark of 17:45.50, and was followed to the wall by Olivia Hill at 17:50.86.
Lili Shainis took silver in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:28.37, 1.34 seconds off of the gold mark posted by Gettysburg's Brooke Lacey. Ana Franzluebbers contributed bronze medal points in the 100-yard freestyle with a 54.38. The gold standard was set by Washington's Kathy Gerhart with an NCAA B-cut time of 52.84.
