BOSTON, Mass. - Roxanna Mead posted the lone victory for the Franklin & Marshall women's squash team in a 8-1 loss to Columbia in the consolation bracket of the College Squash Association (CSA) Kurtz Cup (B Division) Team Championships on Saturday afternoon. The No. 16 Diplomats drop to 10-10 with the defeat, while the No. 13 Lions improve to 6-9.
Mead cruised past Columbia's Katie Quan in three straight games at the No. 2 position with scores of 11-3, 11-7 and 11-6 to notch the only F&M triumph of the afternoon.
At the No. 3 spot, Halley Cruice gave Kate Calihan a stiff test with a see-saw five-gamer, but Calihan edged out the F&M freshman in the decisive fifth game. Cruice secured an 11-9 first game win, before Calihan responded with 11-5, 11-7 victories in the ensuing two games. Cruice squared the match at two games apiece with an 11-9 win in game four, but Calihan came through with an 11-6 count in the final game to secure the win.
Erin Golueke captured one game for the Diplomats at No. 4 in an 11-4, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9 loss, while Morgan Smith pushed her opponent at No. 1 to the limit in her final two games but came up short (11-2, 12-10, 12-10).
The Diplomats will conclude their season of team competition on Sunday at 10:45 am against the loser of the matchup between No. 14 Mount Holyoke and No. 15 Hamilton.
