Diplomats Drop CSA Championship Opener
BOSTON, Mass. - No. 16 Franklin & Marshall fell to No. 9 Middlebury 9-0 in the opening round of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships on Friday afternoon. The Diplomats (10-9) move into the consolation bracket of the Kurtz Cup (B Division) bracket with the loss, while the victory advances the Panthers (15-7) to the semifinal round.
Middlebury captured seven of the nine matches in straight games to secure the win. Two Diplomats managed to stretch their opponents to more than three games as Erin Golueke and Roxanna Mead fell in five and four games, respectively.
At the No. 4 position, Golueke nearly completed a comeback from a two-game deficit against Kathryn Bostwick, but fell just short in the decisive fifth game. After dropping the first two games 11-7, 11-9, Golueke battled back to take games three and four 11-6, 12-10. Bostwick then secured the victory with an 11-7 triumph in the final game.
Mead dropped a four-game tilt at No. 2 to Abby Jenkins. After Jenkins secured an 11-5 game one win, Mead nabbed an 11-8 victory in the second. Jenkins responded, however, with 11-7, 11-6 triumphs to claim the win.
The Diplomats will face off against No. 13 Columbia, which fell 8-1 to No. 12 Williams in the first round, on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
