SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall visited Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon for a pair of Centennial Conference (CC) softball games, taking game one 6-2 before falling 6-3 in the back half of the doubleheader. The Diplomats moved to 10-16, 6-4 CC with the split, while the Garnet went to 11-17, 2-10.
F&M jumped out early in the first game, scoring twice in the top of the first on a two-RBI single by Lexi Piccinich. Crystal Good reached after being hit by a pitch and Taylor Long followed with a single before both scored on Piccinich's base knock.
Three scoreless innings from F&M hurler Izzy Schaefer allowed the Diplomats to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Ryan Correa recorded a one-out double and scored from second as Schaefer helped her own cause with an RBI single up the middle.
The deficit increased to four in the top of the fifth when Piccinich reached on an error with two outs. Gabby Goodwin came on to pinch run for Piccinich, eventually scoring from second on a single by Kelly Van O'Linda, sliding in just under the tag to make the score 4-0.
The Garnet finally struck back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice with two outs, but would get no closer as the Diplomats recorded single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 6-2 win.
Schaefer earned the win for F&M, giving up two earned in a complete-game effort. She also led the Diplomats with three hits on the day while tying Piccinich for the team and game high with two RBIs. Correa also added two hits in the win.
The Swarthmore bats came alive in game two, scoring five in the first three innings. Correa's RBI triple in the second plated Van O'Linda, but after three the Garnet led 5-1.
Katie Wenger and Megan Ryan led off the fifth with back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 5-2. Good followed later in the inning by singling up the middle to score Ryan, making the score 5-3. Still, the Diplomats were unable to fully erase the deficit as Swarthmore added an insurance run in the sixth, holding on for the 6-3 decision.
Good and Schaefer both recorded two hits to lead the Diplomat offense in the second game.
Schaefer (7-9) took the loss for F&M in her second start of the day, allowing five earned in 2 2/3. Wenger came on in relief, allowing one run in 3 1/3 innings.
The Diplomats continue CC play on Tuesday, visiting Gettysburg for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
