Diplomats Drop A Pair

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Franklin & Marshall softball team dropped a doubleheader in its Centennial Conference (CC) opener against Washington College Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats (7-9, 0-2) CC) fell in the first game 9-8, off of a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. In the second game, F&M lost 6-5 after the Shorewomen (10-7, 2-0 CC) used a two-run double in the seventh to win.

In the first game, Washington used a two-out walk-off single in the seventh inning to pick up the victory. With Kristin Cooper on first, Sally Snover laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second. The next batter, Christine Anderson, hit an RBI single to score Cooper for the 9-8 victory.

In the first frame, F&M wasted little time getting on the scoreboard by taking an early 3-0 lead. Alicia Kukoda hit her fourth double of the year, plating Danielle Murphy from first. Samantha Ginder completed the scoring for the inning, hitting her second consecutive homerun, fifth of the season, to put the Diplomats up 3-0.

The Shorewomen came alive over the next two innings scoring eight runs, six of which came off of two homeruns in the second inning, to take an 8-3 lead. The first homerun was compliments of Cooper who drove in four with a blast to center to put the Shorewomen up 4-3. Lauren Dockrill picked hit a two-run homer to extend Washington's lead to 6-3.

Washington's the final two runs came in the bottom of the third when Lindsey Glascock double through the left field side to score Suzanne Patinella, Glascock later touched home for an unearned run.

The Diplomats made a comeback in the top of the fifth inning driving in five runs to tie the contest at 8-8. Kukoda hit her second RBI of the game to plate Murphy to get things started for F&M. The second run came from Malorie Sassaman who reached home off of an error from the shortstop, while Laura Wagoner hit an RBI single to bring in Kukoda. F&M's final two runs of the game came from Caitlin Brust's two-run single to center field, scoring was Rachel Laufer and Wagoner.

Nicole Casey (5-5) took the loss for the Diplomats, pitching a complete game, giving up 14 hits, nine runs, while striking out five batters.

Relief pitcher, Cooper earned the win for Washington, pitching 2.1 innings giving up just one hit while striking out one batter.

In the second game, F&M took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Shorewomen used another two out walk-off to claim the victory. Snover hit a two-run double to right center to end the game 6-5, touching home was Shaelen Nottingham and Cooper.

Washington scored first, getting a run in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead. The Diplomats quickly responded in the third, scoring three runs of their own for a 3-1 edge.

In the bottom of the third, the Shorewomen took a 4-3 lead. Cooper registered her sixth RBI of the day with a single to center field to score Nottingham and Dockrill. Patinella completed the scoring for Washington, after touching home from a single to left field from Anderson. In the fourth frame, the Diplomats recorded the lone run to tie the game at 4-4 from Murphy's single up the middle to score Wagoner.

The next inning and a half was quite for both teams. F&M took the lead 5-4 in the top of the sixth, Murphy earned her second RBI of the day, when she drove in Amanda Schellaci.

Justine Lohrey (2-1) pitched a complete game for the Diplomats. Lohrey gave up 12 hits, six runs, and struck out four.

Cooper, again earned the win for the Shorewomen, pitching three innings. The relief pitcher gave up one hit, one run, while striking out six batters.

Ginder had two hits, including a homerun and four RBI's on the day. Casey was for 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Kukoda recorded three runs, two hits, and two RBI's.
