Diplomats Split Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall split the first two games of its spring break trip on Saturday. The Diplomats (1-5) lost 4-2 to Westfield in their first game of the doubleheader, and took the second game in five innings over St. Joseph (Conn.), 9-1.

In game one, the Owls (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning off of a Courtney Begin single RBI down the left field line that scored Amanda Flower. F&M responded in the bottom of the third inning as Danielle Murphy singled to third base advancing Amanda Schellaci to second. With runners on first and second, Laura Wagoner hit a double to left field for a two-run RBI, scoring Schellaci and Murphy to take the lead 2-1.

The final runs of the game came in the top of the fourth. Westfield came out firing, driving in three runs to retake the lead for good, 4-2. Begin got the scoring started for the Owls, hitting a double down the left field line for her second RBI of the game.

Begin reached home on the next play after a pitching error to make the score 3-2. The last run came from Lisa Policelli, who touched home off of a triple to right center from Kerin DeGirolamo.

Kaitlin Zampino pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts for F&M and fell to 0-3 on the season.

Murphy converted two hits on three at bats with one run to lead the way for the Diplomats.

Tomich notched the win for the Owls, allowing four hits while striking out 13 to improve to 1-0.

Begin was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

In the second game, the Diplomats broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second. Caitlin Brust drove in the first run of the contest with an RBI single that scored Samantha Ginder from second to put F&M up 1-0.

St. Joseph's (1-1) got a run of its own in the top of the third off of an error from the catcher. As Nicole Williams was stealing second, there was a mix-up at second and the ball rolled into center field, allowing Williams to touch home on the play and bring the score to 1-1.

Over the next three innings the Diplomats crossed the plate eight times to take a 9-1 lead and end the game due to the eight-run rule.

Nicole Casey (1-2) earned the win pitching a complete game for the Diplomats. Casey allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out two and walking one.

Ginder was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Emily Hummel took the loss for the Blue Jays after pitching just three innings. Hummel gave up four hits and three runs.
