ALLENTOWN, PA - The Muhlenberg College women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games as the Mules escaped Franklin & Marshall College 1-0 in a Centennial Conference night game.
Statistically, Muhlenberg (8-3-1, 4-1-1 Centennial Conference) held a 29-4 advantage in shots, but placed only six of their scoring tries on goal.
The Mules capitalized on their first corner kick of the game to score the lone goal. Ashley Reed fired a shot that was saved off the goal line by an F&M defender who cleared the ball out to the Muhlenberg backs. Maura Hendsey sent the ball back in, and Kimberly Kicka headed the sphere into the net at the 18:17 mark for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Muhlenberg attempted to add to the lead with three minutes left in the half by taking four shots in succession, but attempts by Rebecca Armstrong and Andrea Dello Russo clanged off the crossbar and post, respectively, to keep the Diplomats within striking distance entering the second half.
However, the Mules defense stiffened in the second frame holding Franklin & Marshall to one second half shot while the Muhlenberg offense fired 12 shots.
In goal, Melissa Ruff (Sr., East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) recorded five saves, while Muhlenberg goalkeeper Stacey Spector tallied four saves.
