Zambrano Scores Hat-Trick as Diplomats Win 2004 F&M Soccer Tournament Title 4-1 Over Goucher
LANCASTER, PA -- Amanda Zambrano (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) scored the first three goals of the game for all Franklin & Marshall College would need as the Diplomats defeated Goucher College 4-1 to capture the 2004 Law Firm of Gray, Patterson, Cody & Taylor Women's Soccer Tournament.
The goals marked the fourth and fifth of the season for Zambrano as she tallied a pair of scores in a 3-0 victory over Wilkes University in the opening round on September 3. In addition, the scores raise her career total to 27 goals in less than three seasons as she surpassed Andrea Cianfrani '98 and 1990 All-America selection Annemarie Merow '91 to move into a tie with Allison Hurley '02 for ninth on the career goals list at the College. Further, she eclipsed Kristin Purcell '92 (23 goals-seven assists-53 points) to move into sole possession of 12th place in career points as Zambrano now has 27 goals and five assists for 59 points in her career.
She wasted little time in the game adding to her career totals as she scored off a Kelly Cassels (So., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) assist to give F&M a 1-0 lead at the 8:23 mark of the first half. One minute later she struck again as Jamie Pirko (So., Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) passed to Cassels who fed Zambrano for a 2-0 lead. She completed the hat trick less than three minutes later as she lofted a Kathryn Roman (So., Allentown, PA/Salisbury) pass over Goucher goalie Anne Calinger to make the score 3-0.
The Gophers attempted to answer back as Casey Whalen found the back of the net with an unassisted goal with 5:06 left in the first half scored an unassisted goal to cut the Diplomat lead to 3-1 going into halftime.
However, F&M closed out the game at the 85:04 mark as Pirko connected on a Jennifer Sewell (Sr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) assist for the 4-1 victory.
In net for the Diplomats, Melissa Ruff (Sr., East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) made one save as Franklin & Marshall held the Gophers to just two shots on goal.
Franklin & Marshall (2-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 9 versus Elizabethtown College at F&M's Baker Campus. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
