LANCASTER, PA - Amanda Zambrano (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) scored twice in the first half and Emily Knapp (Sr., Ellicott City, MD/Notre Dame Prep) added a pair of assists to lead the Franklin & Marshall College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Wilkes University in the opening game of the 2004 Law Firm of Gray, Patterson, Cody & Taylor Women's Soccer Tournament.
The goals raise Zambrano's career total to 24 scores in less than three seasons and move her into a tie with Andrea Cianfrani '98 for 11th on the career list, one goal behind 10th place and 1990 All-America selection Annemarie Merow '91. Further, she moved into a tie with Kristin Purcell '92 (23 goals-seven assists-53 points) for 12th place in career points as Zambrano now has 24 goals and five assists in her career.
Zambrano netted the game winner with 34:26 left in the first half as she finished a pass from Anna Clough (So., Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) off the hands of Wilkes goalie Katie Green. Green swatted the ball straight up inside the crossbar of the goal, but the ball's backspin carried it down and across the goal line for the game-winning score.
Less than eighteen minutes later at the 16:38 mark, Zambrano tacked on an insurance score as she finished a loose ball in front of the net off a pass from Knapp to give the Diplomats a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Colonels attempted to close to within a goal in the closing minutes of the half, but F&M goalie Melissa Ruff (Sr., East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) turned away three Wilkes' shots in the final five minutes of the half.
Franklin & Marshall sealed the game with 36:45 left in the second half as Kelly Cassels (So., Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) connected on a cross from Knapp for the 3-0 final.
In goal, Ruff finished with nine saves on 10 Colonels' shots, while Green made eight saves on 12 Franklin & Marshall shots on goal.
The Diplomats will continue the season on September 4 versus Goucher College at 2:00 p.m. in the second game of the Gray, Patterson, Cody & Taylor Tournament before Wilkes and Goucher meet at 12:30 p.m. on September 5 at Franklin & Marshall's Baker Campus in the final game of the 2004 tournament.
